"TOP FIVE: CLASSIC ROCK CROONERS"

It's pretty self-explanatory what this episode is about: my top five classic rock vocalists. What you need to keep in mind is that this is not American Idol. It's not primarily a singing competition. Any pop star can belt out a song in the right pitch. Vocal ability is, of course, a pre-requisite, but it's more than that. It's range of emotion. It's versatility. It's art...and a whole lot of other stuff that Simon Cowell pretends to care about.

"Last month we began our study into jazz music and saw how it is an essential building block in some of the greatest rock'n'roll music ever put to tape. I limited the artists featured on that show to those who incorporate horns and we did that up right. Well, this show will again be full of syncopated improvisational goodies but with an eye to the more traditional instrumentation of rock. Namely, drums, bass, keyboard, and my personal fave the electric gee-tar."

*Artists include: Cream, Wishbone Ash, and John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

"What exactly do I mean by horns on? Well it all began about two weeks ago when I realized that this look into jazz and classic rock music was going to take more than just one episode. There's just too much to say and too much to play. In contemplation of how to break things up I decided that a pretty slick way to do it would be to first take a look at bands that have the stereotypical instrumentation of this genre."

*Artists include: Chicago, Traffic, The Flock.

"It's a theory of mine that inside of every easy rockin' balladeer there's a primal force that longs to emerge and rock heavy. It's kinda like how every rapper really wants to be an actor and vice versa. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't."

*Artists include: Bob Dylan, Donovan, The Beatles.

*Features include: "That's a Double Whammy!", "Holy Crap, That's an Awesome Jam!", "The Deep Stuff".

"Today's edition is extra special as I will be taking last show's lineup of artists and turning that big volume knob from Heavy Rock (past the agitate and spin cycle) all they way down to the Light Rock setting. There it will stay for the entire program, an episode I have chosen to call "The Lighter Side of the Heavier Side of Rock."

*Artists include: Black Sabbath, Toad, and Humble Pie.

*Features include: "The Deep Stuff" and "That's a Double Whammy!"

"Last time we discussed the more delicate end of the Classic Rock spectrum and now the pendulum has swung the other direction in this episode called 'The Heavier Side of Classic Rock', an episode that will be unapologetically noisy and potentially lead to long-term hearing loss in you and your loved ones."

*Artists include: Black Sabbath, Toad, and Humble Pie.

So much great Classic Rock was made by people who weren't interested in bombastic, explosive, ear-shattering musical arrangements. Unfortunately, many of these artists are overlooked due to a lack of interest in music that doesn't make you want to break out your air guitar. Today we celebrate some of the less voluminous geniuses behind Classic Rock and talk a little bit about why many of these folks never seem to get their due.

On this show we focus on the almighty backbone of Classic Rock and Roll--DRUMS. I talk about drums, drumming, my favorite drummers, and those delicious ice cream treats called drumsticks. Oh, and if you're not a big fan of over-indulgent drum solos, don't worry, that's a whole other show.

*Artists include: Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Cactus.

Further Listening: "Restrictions" by Cactus, "Music From Big Pink" by The Band, "Presence" by Led Zeppelin.

San Francisco during the mid to late 1960's was a model era for freedom, art, and music in particular, right? In this episode of the show I discuss the good and bad that was done for Classic Rock all in the name of feelin' groovy.

*Artists include: Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Grateful Dead.

One of the main problems with your typical Classic Rock Radio station is that they insist on playing only the songs/bands they think people want to hear, thus ignoring an entire world of interesting and talented (but ultimately less popular) peers. With this episode I try to give a deeper glimpse into the musical catalogues of artists who have been unfairly treated as one-hit wonders by playing one you know and...
